The joy of playing

We (meaning Andrew) have FINALLY hit a new stage in play. He is beginning to play with toys more by himself and create things. This is fabulous for a couple of reasons. One it shows me how smart and creative he is all the time, and two, it allows me to get some things done! Yesterday I watched him working so intently picking out just the right pieces for his creation.
Can you guess what it is? A daddy drill of course!

The Magic of Christmas

It has been a couple of busy weeks around here as we get ready for Christmas. It is an amazing experience to be able to enjoy Christmas through Andrew's eyes. Last night as I was getting things ready to put him to bed I looked down stairs to find him staring at the Christmas tree he had just turned on. He ran over to me at the top of the stairs, curled up in my lap, looked down the stairs at the tree and said oh so sweetly and softly, "Mommy, I love it". Such a priceless moment. Here are a few pictures from our Christmas preparations around the house. Who needs decorations? The snowmen were exciting enough. Helping decorate the tree... Wow...he's been one busy little boy. Adding the crowning touch with daddy.

Making Kansas City

Andrew has been enjoying our cooler weather this week. He's had a lot more time to play with his toys and the good news for me is that he actually plays with his toys these days. This morning he was very busy with his blocks, so he played while I cleaned up the house.
(Don't you love the boots?)
A few minutes later I heard him say "Wow" I looked over he had used every block in the basket. I asked him about what he built and he said "I made Kansas City!"

Raining Buckets

You have to be so careful of what you say these days--Andrew is so attentive to what everyone says and takes it all so literal. Yesterday while Andrew was eating breakfast I opened the blinds so he could see outside. Our conversation went something like this: I very casually said, "Look Andrew--it's raining buckets outside." (It was really pouring down out there!) Andrew jumped out of his chair and came running to the window, looked up at the sky, then looked at me quizzically. "Yeah, it's raining buckets." he said. He continued to watch the rain and sky for a minute, looked at me and said, "Where'd the buckets go?"" This morning at breakfast I opened the blinds again, and in his all knowing voice he said, "Look mom, the rain's all turned off, the water fountain's ALLLLLL done! The rain buckets all done--yeah the big orange bucket's all done. " (His bucket is orange, so of course logic would say that the rain bucket is too right?)

A bug in the house

Yikes, my poor little Andrew has gotten a bug...

The hand, foot & mouth bug!

The poor little guy is covered in speckles on his hand, feet and his cute little bum. The doctor says we need to keep him away from others until his fever goes away and the sores in his mouth go away, so it looks like we are staying in this weekend! There's not much to do for him other than give him lots of water and milk to drink, and eat things like pudding and ice cream. I suppose if you have to get a bug, at least he got one that gives you lots of yummy treats!

Fireman school

After a few minutes of cozy snuggling Andrew decided he wanted to go to school-fireman school to be exact. Of course to go to fireman school you must dress the part... ...and no good fireman can go to school without his trusty fireman back pack!

Snugglin' weather

What is it about gray rainy mornings that make even the youngest want to snuggle on the sofa? I went to get Andrew out of his crib this morning, but before I picked him up, I opened his blinds. As soon as he saw the dreary weather outside he asked to take his blanket and pillow downstairs to the sofa. "Want to wear it, and snuggle on the sofa with Momma" he said. Who can resist that? What a great way to start the day.

Talking with Andrew

Andrew is so confident in his language these days. He is all knowing and quite sure of what he is telling you about. Most of the time he gets it right but every now and then we have cute little moments like this...
Andrew: Look Mommy! (as he is pointing out the window)
Me: What do you see?
Andrew: A big truck!
Me: What kind of truck is it?
Andrew: A PU truck (said confidently)
I looked out the passenger window just in time to see a UPS truck pulling up next to us!

Fun at the Carnival

For the past 2 months Andrew has asked on a daily basis to ride a ferris wheel, and not just any ferris wheel but an orange one. Well last week we went to Gladfest, and they had a carnival. While he didn't get to ride a ferris wheel (I'm not that crazy!) he did get to ride his first amusement park ride--the carousel. He was so excited!!

We climbed on and put on his seatbelt. (Yes, they have seat belts these day?!--safety is everywhere!) As the ride started to go around and around, and we waved to daddy Andrew proclaimed, "This is Fun!!"
The second lap around he said,"All done mommy?" By the 3rd time we went around, he threw himself into my arms (thank goodness for that seatbelt!) and clung to my head and shoulders. The 4th and 5th laps were spent prying him from my body and getting him upright again.

Of course on the 6th & last time around he said "Do it again?!"

hmmm--Maybe next year!

Wanna be a duck

Andrew has really gotten into pretend play these days. Everything is a hat in his world and of course the hats determine who he is for the moment. Some are obvious--fireman , cowboy, snowman (stocking cap). Other's a little more interesting--baskets make him turn into "basket man" (I'm not sure what his special powers are yet), and a napkin on the head is 'cooking man" of course!
Well as Andrew was getting ready to dry off the other night after his bath, he spotted his duck towel in the cabinet and insisted on being a duck. He has shyed away from this towel for the past few months (???), so I was curious to see what he would do. As soon as I wrapped him up he beamed from ear to ear and insisted on showing daddy his duck hat! He was so proud of himself and refused to take it off and get dressed.

Candidates by Comparison

Someone sent this to Marc at work this morning (very fitting don't you think?). I really think it speaks for itself...

A dream comes true!

Andrew and his firetruck obsession strikes again. We went to Riverfest this weekend, and while it was a bit of bust (the smallest fest I ever did see). They had a couple of great attractions. Rather than having a carnival they had a giant inflatable park for the kids. They had at least 20 different inflatable objects to climb, jump, bounce and slide on. Andrew really didn't have any interest in any of them until he came across this one.... (the picture is a bit tough due to the setting sun)

Anytime we are around a fire truck, or for that matter see one screaming past us on the highway he asks to climb the ladder, so when he saw this one you can imagine what he asked for. Little did he know his wish would come true!

He loved the idea of playing on the firetruck until he realized that we had to climb to the top. With some coercing and bribing though we got him started on climbing the ladder. (On the left side of the fire truck you can see the little path you go up. You have to use a rope to pull yourself up it). The first few steps involved me pushing and pulling him up the incline, but he quickly got the hang of it and finished going up by himself. Based on his earlier experiences with these types of climbers this is a HUGE accomplishment, just making it to the top! As we sat down to go down the slide he still wasn't too sure...

But when we got to the bottom he exclaimed, "This is fun, a do it again!"

He was so proud of himself, and still talks about climbin' the ladder.

Yum! Yum!

Grammie took Andrew to Baskin Robbins this week for his first ice cream clown! Andrew was in heaven. Take a peek...

Mini Me

I came down stairs the other morning to find Andrew "being mommy" and working on the 'puter. Doesn't he look like he knows exactly what he's doing?

Andrew, Andrew, Andrew

One of our favorite things about Andrew (there are so many!) is that he talks about himself in the third person. Andrew wants a snack, Andrew needs a toy, Andrew see a fire truck. ALL day long this is what we hear. But the best of all is when he says "Andrew needs a big mommy hug" or "Andrew needs a daddy kiss". It's just so irresistible. You just have to drop what you are doing and give him that kiss and hug!

Up until yesterday he always said "boo-coo" for peek-a-boo, and it was adorable. Yesterday he was standing amongst the sheets hanging on the line saying "Andrew play a game." Then I hear him saying, with such concentration in his voice, "peek a, peek a, peek aaaaaaa.....boo" It was said with such conviction that he immediately beamed from ear to ear and yelled "I got it!" Bye-bye boo-coo.

There are so many of these moments that I wish I could capture each day. As they happen I think to myself I can't wait to tell everyone about that one. But then 30 minutes later he does something else cute, or sweet, or down right hilarious and pretty soon I have forgotten the last story and am wrapped up in the next. (I tell ya, parenthood has shot my short term memory!) It's amazing to see how much he grows and changes each day. As much as I was fascinated by watching him grow and change physically the first year and a half, I am even more amazed at watching his brain develop. I swear at times it's as though you can see those connections being made. Daily I catch Marc or I saying "when did he learn...." It's always something new.

I now understand what people mean when they say enjoy every moment they grow up so fast. As I watch my baby put together full sentences these days... I realize how quickly he grows. It makes me sad and yet so proud all at the same time.

Night Out Against Crime

This year is the 25th Anniversary of the National Night Out Against Crime. This is a great event put on by the police and fire departments. Gladstone celebrated theirs tonight and we decided to check it out. I thought Andrew was going to burst from the moment we stepped out of the car. Every where we turned there was another emergency vehicle. And they had full access to climb in them!

You didn't have to ask Andrew twice if he wanted to climb in. He took off in a run for the firetrucks and was climbing in before the fireman even asked if he wanted to. He checked out every nook and cranny in the firetruck.

They had clowns, men on stilts and McGruff the Crime dog out tonight!

We even got to look inside a helicopter.

Is it time to go home already?

Andrew could have stayed and played all night! Aside from the 100 degree heat it was a great night; one that he will talk about for many, many days to come.We will definitely go back next year!

One less car

Well we did it, or I should say Marc did it. We took his car to CarMax last night and he sold it. He has been riding the bus for 2 weeks and oddly enough he is loving it. Although what's not to love in some ways. A 30 minute ride where you can relax and get lost in your thoughts rather than yelling at those around you for going too slow, driving too fast, cutting you off, talking on the cell phone... When you put it like that it actually sounds kind of nice. For the past couple weeks Marc has been riding the bus as a trial run, to make sure it worked before he committed to it for good. At first Andrew was really confused when we looked outside and would see Marc's car sitting on the driveway. We talked about daddy riding on the bus, but he would still search the house for him, not quite sure what all this meant. Nowadays, Andrew looks outside, sees the car on the drive, and oh so matter of factly says. "Daddy no here, daddy ride the bus." Such a smart little guy. Andrew went with us last night of course, and he wasn't so sure about the whole process. While Marc was cleaning out his car last night, I told Andrew we were going to take daddy to the store to sell the car. He must have heard that we were selling daddy, because he flipped out when we got ready to go. I put Andrew in my car, while Marc drove his. The whole time I was buckling him in he kept yelling "Daddy ride Mommy car. Daddy ride blue car. No ride daddy car." Thankfully with a bowl full of dry cereal and The Wiggles pumping through the car after a few minutes he had forgotten all about it, and we enjoyed a nice singalong in the car while driving to CarMax.

Playing Dressup

We have entered a new phase in the house...playing dress up. It began quite simply with wearing a tie occasionally or putting on my shoes, and of course lots of hats. This week he has really branched out. He's been raiding the laundry basket and pretending to be "daddy", wearing his T-shirts and even his boxers. Click on the link below and you can check out Andrew's newest ensemble--a firefighter. http://www.photodex.com/sharing/viewalbum.html?alb=142880

Fun In the Sun

We had a fun afternoon playing outside! Here are a few snapshots--look at that cheesy smile! I love it!

It Had to Happen Sometime

What is it about being 2 that requires an angry toddler to lie on the floor and scream and cry? Not even a week into being 2 years old and Andrew had to test out this new right and responsibility of his. He looks like a natural doesn't he?

The cause of this fit you ask: He wanted a glass of milk to drink with his banana pudding!

The best part of it all is that after 20 minutes I told him he could either go to his room and cry or go sit at the table and eat his snack. Just like that he popped up off the floor, turned off the tears and sat down to eat his snack. Oh, if only I had done this 15 minutes earlier. Lesson learned for next time!

Andrew's Parade

We hope everyone had a fun and fabulous 4th! Andrew had a fun time getting ready for the 4th and put on his very own 1 man parade--marching around the yard.

A Firetruck Party!

Well you by now you probably know that Andrew had a firetruck party for his birthday. Heck--I think half of Gladstone knows he had a firetruck party. He's told everyone he sees about it for the last week! We have tons of pictures to sort through, but here's a little sample of the fun he had! It was indeed a Happy Birthday for the little guy--or as he says it a "Happy Burpy!"

Andrew got to sit in the big truck!

Andrew, Brooke, Katelyn, Preston, & Abby

Make a wish!

Mmmm...Tastes yummy!

Jumping Right In

Well, we have had an exciting weekend. Our little guy jumped right into... toilet training! (You thought I was going to say the pool, right?) I wish!

Saturday night Andrew asked to sit on the potty right before his bath. So I said what the heck and ran to get his potty seat out of the garage. It's only been like a month since I bought it! (Nothing like procrastination, or maybe I was waiting for the perfect opportunity!) I got it all set up and he was so excited. He wasn't sure about it at first but after a couple trips in and out of the tub he eventually had success! Hooray! He was so proud! We danced, we sang, we ate chocolate and we had to go find daddy so that we could "show daddy". It was a huge night in Andrew's world. My favorite part of the whole evening--I was trying to help Andrew with his "aim", and when I went to show him how to aim at something other than the wall, he yelled "MINE" and pushed my hand away!

The good news--is we have been on the potty for the last 2 days and have had several successful moments... of course the big bowl of choco (M&M's) sitting on the counter could have something to do with that success.

Could this be the end of diapers coming? We can only hope! At $55 a month for diapers we could certainly use the savings. Maybe we can get a couple more gallons of gas.

What a night

What a crazy night last night! They had been forecasting thunderstorms for last night all week long. At 5 I turned on the TV to hear the weather man comparing the setup for last nights storms to a series of storms that came through in 1974--The deadliest set of storms EVER! In fact they even put us in a PDS Tornado Watch--that means particularly damaging storms, something they only do on rare occasions, swell!

If you know me at all you know I hate storms, and with Marc out of town it was even worse. Now I have not only myself and the dogs to worry about but Andrew too--how to keep him safe, how to stay calm...

The good news was I had a few hours to prepare (the storms weren't coming until after 11), so after a short freak out and panic attach prepare I did!! I put Andrew down to sleep for the night and went to town creating our own comfy tornado shelter in the basement. After our last close call there were some definite lessons learned. I pulled up a phone list of essential numbers (last time the power went out these were all on the computer). I cleared off all the counters, including Marc's workbench--happy hunting when you get home! I created a snack cabinet in the basement, and stocked piled it with flashlights and batteries.

I created a little fort for Andrew, and put up the Aerobed for myself.
Andrew's little corner--with dog bed ready to throw on top of him just in case!

I even wrapped the dogs kennels in layers of blankets (in case of breaking glass).

OK...so maybe I'm a little crazy and neurotic...but I was ready for this storm!

At 10:30 they gave us a warning that the storm was about 15 minutes away so I took Andrew out of his bed, laid him down in the basement, took up a post next to the weather radio, and waited....and waited...and waited. Apparently the safety shield that resides over our house and has protected us from the many close call we've Had in the past few years did it's thing again. Literally 10 minutes before the storm was to hit, it split in half, going right around us! Oh happy day!

My handy dandy weather radio. Notice that none of the lights are going off like they had been all night...Hooray!

The most amazing part of this to me was that Andrew slept through the whole thing including me carrying him up and down the stairs. What a kid...what a night!
